Cliff Thompson
Class of 1937 - Football, Hockey & Baseball

Cliff Thompson combined a deft skating ability with an explosive shot that made him the best hockey player on his team, his league and one of the best in Stoneham High history. A superb all-around athlete, the 1937 Stoneham High School graduate lettered in football, hockey and baseball from his sophomore through senior years.

A fine runner, passer and punter in football, Thompsonís feats include a 90 yard punt his sophomore year and four passes caught in a victory versus Reading, two of which were touchdowns.

Thompson dominated on the ice for the Stoneham hockey team. He made his mark early, leading the team in scoring and being named a Greater Boston Interscholastic League All Star as a sophomore.

He emerged as a force in his junior year, as the team sported a 9-1 record to take the league crown. He was unanimously voted to the Greater Boston Interscholastic All Star team for the second year.

With the All Stars, Thompson scored a goal and two assists in the annual game against Catholic High of Montreal, a 4-3 victory. As a captain of the hockey team in his senior campaign, Thompson led the squad to another 9-1 record and dominated the G.B.I. League as its top scorer with 18 goals and 6 assists, for a total of 24 points. Returning to the G.B.I. All Star team for the third consecutive season, Thompson notched all four goals in their 4-3 win over Catholic High of Montreal.

Cliff was able to make a living by virtue of his hockey talents, spending several seasons with the Boston Olympics and two brief tours with the Boston Bruins, a rare feat for an American back then.

Thompson took time out from his hockey career to serve in World War II, receiving two Bronze Stars, one Silver Star and the French Croix de Guerre. He later owned his own electrical business and lived in Reading with his family until his passing in 1997.
