Wayne Fillback
Coach - 32 Years

Former SHS history teacher and track/cross country coach Wayne Fillback dedicated his adult life to helping kids. Thousands of Spartans turned out to be the lucky beneficiaries over the course of Fillback’s 32-year career.

Fillback coached both boys’ and girls’ indoor and outdoor track as well as boys’ and girls’ cross-country at Stoneham High School, and enjoyed some marvelously successful seasons while coaching the Spartans. Fillback was the Boston Globe Cross-Country Coach of the Year in 1987 after the girls posted an undefeated season and compiled a 26-1 record in the Middlesex League from 1986-88. The Spartans captured the Middlesex League title in all three of the aforementioned seasons.

Runners like Danielle Fuligni and SHS Hall of Famer Kristin Seabury headed a talented corps of harriers during Fillback’s tenure as a cross-country and track coach, and were an instrumental part of multiple Class C titles won under Fillback’s tenure as well as an EMass Div. II Cross Country State Title in 1987. Fillback was again the coach of Middlesex League champs when his boys’ teams captured league titles in both 1993 and 1997. Talented distance runners like Anthony Ragucci, Brian Labriola, Ronnie Montgomery, Adam Walker and Keith Rogers led those squads to prominence.

In the classroom, Fillback was a dedicated history teacher who was in charge of the AP history program and routinely taught the best and the brightest to ever walk the corridors of Stoneham High.

The SHS track legend left such a lasting impression at Stoneham High that the outdoor track was renamed the “Wayne Fillback-Alain Rocher Track & Field Facility” in May, 2007. An avid long distance runner in his spare time, Fillback has completed the Boston Marathon a staggering seven times.

Fillback is retired from teaching and coaching at Stoneham High and still makes his residence in Andover, continues to run competitively in local road races while racking up sub-eight minute miles and dedicates his time as an MSTCA track official during the indoor and outdoor high school track seasons.
