  Richard Kwiatkowski
1976 - Soccer, Basketball & Baseball

Richard (Dick) Kwiatkowski was a three-year starter on the soccer team, team MVP, Co-captain and Middlesex League All Star his senior year. In the winter Dick turned his attention to basketball culminating a three-year varsity career as team MVP, Co-captain, Middlesex League Scoring Champion, Middlesex League All Star, and Boston Herald American Basketball Honor Roll.

As a senior, Dick was convinced by Coach Seabury to come out for baseball and was able to contribute to the team’s success that year. On the soccer field, Dick made headlines. He was MVP of the first Stoneham team to ever qualify for the state tournament while posting the best record in the program’s seven year history at 11-3-2. Dick, the team’s center half-back, was named to the Middlesex League All Star Team.

As a returning starter his senior year in basketball, he was described as “a 5’10”, good ball-handling guard who can penetrate.” In a win over East Boston, The Stoneham Independent read “Dick Kwiatkowski, playing little more than half the game, scored 18 points as a fast-moving guard.”

The Stoneham Spartans concluded their season 6-14 but not before Dick Kwiatkowski poured in 377 total points on the year and 345 points in Middlesex League competition to win the Middlesex League scoring title, a 25 point edge over his next closest rival. Accolades his senior season included being named team Co-captain, team MVP, Middlesex League All Star, Middlesex League Scoring Champion, and Boston Herald American Basketball Honor Roll. He scored 28 points including five of the team’s nine in overtime, while leading Stoneham to a 63-60 upset win over the number one unbeaten team in eastern Massachusetts, Wakefield High School.

Dick went on to Bates College where he earned four varsity letters in soccer, was named a tri-captain, and received the Senior Soccer Award in addition to being named to the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin All Star Team his junior and senior years. He graduated from Bates, then went on to earn an MBA.

Dick currently resides in the Washington D.C. area, where he continues his involvement in athletics coaching youth sports teams on which his son, Andrew, and daughter, Nicole, play.
