  Victoria Watchko Leeman
1995 - Soccer & Tennis

From the time Tory Watchko entered Stoneham High School, she made a lasting impact in the sport of tennis. Starting in her freshman year, she garnered eight wins in singles, losing just two matches. With her many victories, Tory claimed the #1 seed on the women’s tennis Team her freshman year and never looked back. She held that position throughout her four years at SHS.

As a sophomore, Tory was the Co-MVP with a 9-2 record and was named a Middlesex League All-Star. She competed in the State and New England Tournaments making it to the North Finals. In her junior year, Tory was ranked a top player in all of New England. Entering her senior year, she had amassed 28 career victories. Throughout her high school career, Tory was consistently ranked #2 or #3 in the league.

Given Tory’s dedication, skill, hard work, and leadership, she not only won many matches but also gave her teammates a leader. She was a team captain in her senior year and ended her tennis career at Stoneham High with a career record of 40 -15. Tory had the most victories of any girl in Stoneham history and was the first girl to hit 40 regular season wins in the league. Her coach Jim Carino stated, “She may be the best player to come out of Stoneham since Sharon Russell in the early 70s. Tory has unbelievable ground strokes and a fantastic serve.” As a senior, she helped propel the girl’s tennis team to the tourney for the first time in 50 years. Though proud of her accomplishments, as Tory reflected on her four years at SHS, she was really only ever “interested in the well-being of her team during her career.” (Stoneham Independent)

During her four years at SHS, Tory also played soccer. As a senior, she set up the winning goal to put Stoneham in the tourney for the first time in girl’s soccer history, beating perennial favorite Lincoln-Sudbury.

After Stoneham High, Tory went on to UMass Amherst. While at UMass, Tory was part of the crew team. She graduated with a double major in Political Science and Legal Studies. She currently works for Boston College as an Associate Director in University Advancement.

Tory and her husband Matt Leeman live in Waltham with their two children, Avery (5) and Nate (3).
